Obituary for Mary H. Mauro

Mary H. Mauro
Mary H. Mauro of White Plains, N.Y., formerly of Yonkers, passed away on November 10, 2016 in South Carolina. She was born July 21, 1938 to William and Mary Hutton. Mary, a graduate of St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, received her B. A. degree from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, and was awarded a Master’s degree in Education by Fordham University in 1962. On June 29, 1963, she married John J. Mauro of White Plains. She was an English teacher on the faculty of Hendrick Hudson High School and taught English at Lincoln High School in Yonkers. She later earned her License for Practical Nursing and worked for a local pediatrician. She retired after teaching Home Instruction for the White Plains Public Schools. In addition to working, Mary was a devoted PTA member as well as a volunteer for CCD instruction at Assumption Church in White Plains, and Pre-Cana for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in White Plains.

Mary is survived by her husband John and their children John G. Mauro (Christine), Patrick Mauro (Karen), and Jerilyn Myers (Rich). She was the beloved “Grandma Mary” and “Mimi” to her grandchildren Sabrina, Jason, Jackson and Jillian Mauro, and Richard and John Myers. Mary is also survived by her sister-in-law Patricia Calabro (Dominick) and many nieces and nephews.

Mary will be remembered as a loyal wife and devoted mother. When her children were younger, Mary enjoyed being a spectator at all of their athletic events. She had an open-house policy for all of her children’s friends, and hosted numerous holiday meals and birthday celebrations. For a woman of Irish descent, she made a delicious lasagna. Throughout all of her health issues, she remained kind, caring and generous, always making time to lend a supportive ear.

A memorial service will be Friday 11/18 from 5-9pm at McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett, White Plains. Funeral Mass will be Saturday 10am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, White Plains and interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
