Obituary for Laurel E. Holzer (McGuire)

Laurel McGuire Holzer, life-long resident of White Plains, passed away on July 30th at the age of 102. She was the wife of the late Richard J. Holzer Jr., and was predeceased by her daughter Sherry L. Bennett in 1994. She is survived by her son Richard J. Holzer III of Pennsylvania and her daughter Dale Ann Dickerson of Florida, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Laurel was a 1933 graduate of White Plains High School, and raised her family on Sunset Drive but recently resided at Greenwich Woods Health Care Center in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was co-owner and treasurer of Richard J. Holzer And Son Plumbing And Heating Company with husband Richard, which operated for over 42 years in the county. Upon his passing in 1984, she managed and operated the business for another 10 years until retiring in 1994. She was a long-time member of the White Plains Kiwanis Club, and a 55-year member of The White Plains Women’s Club, where she chaired many committees and was best known for her work as club Treasurer for over 18 years. She was also secretary of the White Plains High School Class of 1933 Committee and was the last surviving club member in our area. Laurel was very active in our local school system as well. She was past president of The George Washington Elementary School PTA, past president of The White Plains High School PTA, and volunteered on many committees and fund-raising activities in support of students and teachers. She was also a member of The White Plains High School Alumni Association, and a long-time member of The White Plains Tiger Fans Committee supporting the football team and all student athletes at the high school. Laurel was a member of the Penn State University Nittany Lion Club and actively supported football team members and other student athletes through scholarship programs such as the Levi Lamb Fund. She was very involved in her community as well. Laurel was a founding member of the Woodcrest Heights Neighborhood Association, a member of the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department Eastside Engine Company #3 Ladies Auxiliary, the White Plains American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary, and Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary as well. She was a contributor to the White Plains Beautification Committee also. Laurel was also a founding member of The Riverside on Lake Zoar Community Association in Riverside, Connecticut where the family owned a summer cottage. Laurel was a communicant of Our Lady Of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church and a senior guild member. Laurel’s love and commitment to her family, our schools, and the White Plains community will always be remembered by family, friends, and all who knew her! A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in White Plains at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 2nd. Internment will follow at White Plains Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the White Plains Woman’s Club.
